Driving an EV From Muscat to Salalah: What the Charging Map Does Not Tell You

This is the drive that defines electric motoring in Oman, and it is the one thing that makes this country genuinely different from Qatar or the UAE. Salalah is close to a thousand kilometres from Muscat. The charging is fine while you are in the Capital Area and it thins out fast once you are past Nizwa.

The route, honestly

Muscat to Nizwa is comfortable in almost any modern EV. Nizwa to Haima is where planning starts to matter. Haima to Salalah is the long empty stretch, and it is where a car with a marginal thermal system finds out that it has one. None of that makes the drive unwise — thousands of people do it — but it does make it a drive you prepare for rather than one you set off on.

What to check before you go

Three things, and they are all readings rather than parts:

The pack, cell by cell. An average state of health tells you very little. What matters is spread — a pack with one weak module will deliver its rated range around town and lose it badly on a long run at speed in heat.

The cooling, under load. A cooling circuit that is fine at idle in a workshop can be marginal at 120 km/h in July. It has to be tested the way it will be used. That is the core of a battery health and thermal check.

The charging control. If the car negotiates badly with a charger it will fall back to a slow rate, and a slow rate at Haima turns a stop into an afternoon. This is often a software fix rather than a hardware one.

What to carry

A Type 2 cable even if you plan on DC only, an adapter set if your car came in on import with the wrong port — better still, have the port converted, because an adapter is one more contact resistance in a circuit that already runs hot. And a plan for where you will stop rather than a hope.

The part nobody mentions: the descent

If you take the mountain route rather than the coast, the descent runs almost entirely on regeneration. That is easier on the brakes than it sounds — so much easier that on cars driven that way regularly the discs corrode from disuse rather than wear out. It is a real fault and it is one we look for specifically here.

Range in the heat

Expect meaningfully less than the rated figure in July, and not mainly because of the air conditioning. The pack's own cooling draws power, and at sustained highway speed in high ambient heat that draw is not small. Plan on the real number rather than the brochure one and the drive is uneventful.

We are one workshop in Muscat covering the whole country, and the mobile unit covers the Capital Area. Before a long run, book a full check — it is the cheapest part of the trip.
