Summer EV Maintenance in Oman: Your 2026 Checklist

Short answer: EV maintenance in Oman is not one summer job but two. In the north — Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa and the interior — the problem is heat: 43 °C is routine, and Civil Aviation Authority stations recorded 49.4 °C at Muqshin in July 2026. In Dhofar during the khareef it is the opposite: 25–28 °C, humidity near 88% and salt-laden sea fog. Heat work means cooling, tyres, the 12V battery and how you park and charge; khareef work means brakes, filters, seals and corrosion. A car driven Muscat to Salalah in August needs both lists.

How hot Oman actually gets, north versus Salalah
Muscat's climate normals put the mean daily maximum at 40.4 °C in June and the mean daily minimum at 30.6 °C, with monthly records above 49 °C in July and August. Mean humidity climbs from about 42% in May to 67% in August: the capital gets hotter first and stickier later. Inland is worse — Climates to Travel puts Nizwa near 43/28 °C in June and July — and the Batinah does not wait for summer, with Oman Observer reporting Sohar as the country's hottest station on 28 April 2026 at 43.4 °C.
Salalah runs a different calendar. During the khareef — mid-June to mid-September, reported as 21 June to 21 September in 2026 — Climates to Travel puts the city near 28/25 °C in July, genuinely cooler than the north, with humidity peaking around 88% in August. Rainfall is modest, but cloud, fog and drizzle are near constant.

What heat does to an EV battery
Two different things get called heat damage. The first is the range you lose on a hot day, which is temporary. Recurrent, analysing roughly 29,700 vehicles, found about 5% range loss at 32 °C rising to 17–18% at 37–38 °C (Recurrent). That is the air conditioning drawing power, not the pack shrinking.
The second is permanent capacity loss. Geotab's 2026 study of more than 22,700 EVs found average loss of 2.3% a year, projecting about 81.6% state of health at eight years, with hot-climate vehicles degrading roughly 0.4 percentage points a year faster (Geotab). Read that carefully: Geotab defines a hot climate as one where more than 35% of days exceed 25 °C, and Oman clears that by an enormous margin, so 0.4 points is a floor, not a forecast. The biggest stressor was charging habit — heavy DC fast charging above 100 kW averaged 3.0% loss a year against 1.5% for cars that rarely fast charge. The parked car problem, and why the coast is worse
Calendar-ageing work published in RSC Advances in 2025 stored cells at 55 °C for three years. At 90% state of charge the solid electrolyte interphase layer grew beyond 300 nm and conductivity fell by more than 20% over 36 months — roughly double the loss measured at 10% state of charge (RSC Advances). Hot pack, high state of charge, time. No driving required.
Here is the Oman-specific part, and it is our own inference rather than a published finding: that mechanism runs on how long the pack stays hot, not on the afternoon peak — which makes the coast the harder place to own an EV, even though the interior is hotter. Quriyat, an hour along the coast from Muscat, recorded a 24-hour minimum of 42.6 °C on 26 June 2018 — the highest minimum temperature ever recorded anywhere on Earth — and stayed above 41.9 °C for 51 consecutive hours, driven by humid marine air over a sea surface at around 32 °C (Weather Underground). One caveat, stated honestly: the World Meteorological Organization does not maintain a record category for highest minimum temperature, so this is climatologist-verified rather than WMO-certified. A car in Nizwa bakes at 43 °C then sheds several degrees overnight; one in Seeb or Sohar in August barely cools at all.
Your summer checklist

- Park in shade and use a sun shade. Tesla's hot-weather guidance says the same, and covered parking beats any accessory you can buy.
- Plug in during long stays. Tesla's wording is to leave the vehicle plugged in whenever it is not in use, even in warm weather, so it cools the pack from the grid.
- Do not leave it at a high state of charge for weeks. That is the calendar-ageing lever. One exception: LFP packs, where some makers instruct owners to keep the limit at 100% and charge fully weekly.
- Check tyre pressures cold, after three hours parked. Pressure moves roughly 1–2 PSI per 10 °F, and bleeding air from heat-soaked tyres leaves them dangerously underinflated once cool. Book tyre and alignment work before a long drive.
- Test the 12V battery rather than eyeballing it. The AAA calls heat the number one cause of battery failure, with callouts spiking after several days above 32 °C. In an EV it fails as a car that will not wake up — run a low-voltage diagnostic.
- Pre-cool the cabin while still plugged in. From the wall it costs nothing in range; from the pack it costs you kilometres.
- Clean the condenser and change the cabin filter. Garden hose and soft brush, never a pressure washer. On most EVs that stack serves the battery cooling loop too, which is why we treat A/C and HVAC service as a battery job — our own explanation, not a published study.
Khareef and the coast: humidity, salt and rusty brakes
Owners who spend the season in Salalah come back with the same complaint: noisy brakes and rusty-looking discs. Regenerative braking does most of the deceleration in an EV, so the friction brakes rarely get hot enough to burn moisture off the discs. Cast-iron rotors corrode and pit, calipers can seize, and rear brakes suffer worst because they do the least work.
Some cars have a built-in answer. Kia's EV6 owner's manual documents a Brake Disc Cleaning function: if there is surface rust on the disc or a squeal can be heard, select regenerative braking level 0 and apply the brake pedal around ten times, with regen temporarily off while it runs (Kia owner's manual). That is a Kia and Hyundai group feature — do not assume a Tesla, BYD or MG has an equivalent. For other cars, our own advice is the same idea done manually: reduce regen on a quiet road once a week and brake firmly a few times.
The rest of the coastal list is workshop guidance rather than cited research, and we would rather say so. Rinse the underbody and wheel arches after coastal or khareef driving, and never let a salt film sit under a car that then bakes. Check charge-port seals and drains, inspect high-voltage cable and connector seals, and wash in shade rather than onto hot paint. Treat the cabin filter as a twice-yearly item: once before summer for dust, once after khareef for a filter that has been wet and then baked. After a damp season, have the brakes and suspension inspected straight away.
Charging in Oman this summer, and what changes on 1 October
Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, with the Authority for Public Services Regulation and the Oman Net Zero Centre, has set public EV charging fees effective 1 October 2026, tied to the power of the charger (Times of Oman). Shell Oman Marketing and First Electric Vehicle Company are named as currently active operators.

The fastest public chargers cost 2.4 times the slowest per kWh, and they are the same ones Geotab links to 3.0% annual degradation instead of 1.5%. From October, in Oman, the charging habit that ages your battery fastest is also the one that empties your wallet fastest.
Home charging is in another league. Oman's residential tariff for a primary account, in force since January 2025, is 14 baisa per kWh for the first 4,000 kWh, 18 baisa from 4,001 to 6,000 kWh and 32 baisa above that (Oman Observer). At 14 baisa a 60 kWh charge costs OMR 0.84 — about 3.6 times cheaper per kWh than the slowest public rate and 8.6 times cheaper than the ultra-fast one. The regulator also cut residential tariffs for summer 2026, 20% off the first band for June to August, as reported by Oman Observer. But that discount lands on the first band only, and air conditioning plus a car charger through July can easily reach the higher bands. Oman's standard VAT rate is 5%, and neither announcement says whether these prices include it.
If you have off-street parking, a properly installed home charger is the best-value change you can make. Oman Observer reported 160 public charging points nationwide in June 2026, against a ministry target of 350 stations by 2027. Planning a Muscat to Salalah drive in summer
The run is about 1,000 km and takes the car through both Omani summers in a day: heat that reached 48.4 °C at Haima in Al Wusta this July, then cloud and 88% humidity in Dhofar. Charging along the corridor is thin, with a small number of points at Nizwa, Haima, Muqshin and Thumrait, so check live availability in Shahin and plan around one being out of service. The pre-trip list is the summer checklist done in one go: condenser and cooling system, coolant, cabin filter, tyres checked cold at the start of the day, the 12V tested rather than assumed, and brakes inspected before a run that barely uses them and then asks a lot of them in the Dhofar hills. Confirm route-based preconditioning works — Tesla's guidance is to navigate to the charger so the pack preconditions 30 to 45 minutes before arrival. Arrive with enough buffer to take a slower, cheaper session than the 181 kW-plus charger, and carry water: a charging stop in Al Wusta in July is a heat-exposure question too.
What a proper summer EV service covers
A summer check is cooling, electrics and condition, documented. Understand your warranty first. MG publishes its Oman terms openly: 72 months or 200,000 km on the vehicle, 96 months or 200,000 km on the battery. What it does not publish is a state-of-health percentage, so that eight-year term protects against failure, not gradual capacity loss. MG's exclusions include repairs by non-authorised workshops, so keep high-voltage warranty work at the franchised dealer. BYD does not publish Oman warranty terms online at all — ask the dealer for the booklet rather than trusting figures quoted for other countries.
